Re-educated by Lucy Kellaway

An easy read, that details Lucy’s move from a 30 year successful career as a journalist at the FT to an inner city secondary teacher.

The frustration I had with the book is Lucy's level of privilege; an Oxford graduate living in a large mortgage free Highbury home with a very well paid job. Her circumstances and contacts made the ‘Teach now’ company she built look surprisingly easy to fund and her transition to an inner city teacher a viable choice. For many it isn’t or they have to sacrifice far more than she did. However this is brought up in the second to last chapter; as she starts to see the bubble she has been living which has given her so many choices, she acknowledges not all of us will have this luxury.

With these things in mind, if you are thinking of retraining as a teacher it is a must read, the level of commitment is extremely high and should not be under estimated.
